The Walker’s Creek Community
Walker's Creek is located between Alexandria and Temperance Hall. One of the earliest settlers was Jonathon Deadman, who was living there in 1830. Born in 1808, he lived until 1890. His log house, with an open dog-trot, was still standing in 1980, occupied by the Shelah Carter family. Isaac Willoughby also lived on Walker's Creek early; as did his daughter Martha and her husband John Helmonteller, and a daughter Eliza and husband John Washer. The Willoughbys later moved to Helton Creek.
Wilson Tubb and wife Frankie Plunkett lived on Walker's Creek, as did their son John B. Tubb, who is buried there with family members in the Tubb Cemetery. Possibly, some of this family had a store of some kind; a post office named Tubbville was there from 1898 to 1904.
The Malone's Chapel Baptist Church was built on Walker's Creek about 1890 and is still an active congregation. By 1904, a school was located on Walker's Creek. It was a small frame building, and when Clara Nixon was the teacher there about 1943, the building had never been painted, inside or outside. It was located in a spot that could be reached on foot or by horse, but was inaccessible to automobiles. Mrs. Nixon made considerable improvements to the school, and it was closed a few years later.
