The Temperance Hall Community
An early residence in Temperance Hall
An early residence in the Temperance Hall community belonged to Samuel Caplinger and was built in 1821. Nicholas Smith later purchased the home in 1842. The house was on the National Register of Historic Places until it was torn down in 1988. The community had a hotel and a store, which are still standing. The name Temperance Hall was actually given to a building in which the Sons of Temperance (1849) used the second story as a meeting place. Stephen Robinson was the first known settler, arriving around 1800. The Stokes Family purchased land from the speculators and were on their way to the area in 1818, when the wagon got away from the father, who was killed in the crash. However, the mother and her three sons continued the trip. The area developed around a thriving mill, which attracted business to the area. By 1915, Temperance Hall had a school, two churches, and a resident doctor.
The Temperance Hall Church of Christ still has an active congregation today. It was established in 1904, while the Methodist church has been there since 1888.
