The Peeled Chestnut Community
The Peeled Chestnut Methodist Church (1976)
The area of Peeled Chestnut was not the most sought after land because of the poor ground. The name "Peeled Chestnut" comes from a tree, a chestnut tree of course, that was located near the road and had for some reason or another been peeled. Not many early settlers chose Peeled Chestnut due to the poor land conditions, but some of the families that would later settle there were Porter Hayes, who owned a store there, that closed not so very long ago.
However, the Peeled Chestnut Methodist Church had been established as early as 1873. The people of Peeled Chestnut were served by the Silver Point Post Office. In order to get there, one had to go across Mine Lick and up by William's Crossroads and across Falling Water. Many people that lived in Peeled Chestnut had never seen their post office, because of the great distance away that it was. Another family from the Peeled Chestnut community was the Billings family.
