The Keltonburg Community
The community of Keltonburg was undoubtedly named after James Kelton, the owner of the first business, a mill, established in 1875. Keltonburg developed much like Temperance Hall. A post office was built and named after Mr. Kelton, which operated from 1884 until 1908. Bethel Magness is among those who once owned thriving businesses in Keltonburg, which at one time had at least three stores, with the last store closing about 1981.
Keltonburg had three churches, and, at one time, a two-year high school. A Baptist Church, Methodist Church and Church of Christ all have called Keltonburg home.
Several Churches of Christ were organized throughout DeKalb County in the 1890's, many of which were formed by a man by the name of Jeff Boles, who moved to the Sink Creek area, just two miles west of Keltonburg, in 1889 from White County. Among the churches he organized was the the Keltonburg Church, which was established not far from the Bole's farm. The Bildad Baptist Church was established in 1809. It later became a Two-Seed Baptist in 1854; the last member died in 1992. The Methodist Church was organized in 1893 and is still active. Its cemetery has been used for many years as a community cemetery. A Missionary Baptist Church was established in the old Keltonburg store in 1983.
Early settlers in the area were members of the Cantrell family and their in-laws, the Potter and Magness families.
Much like other smaller communities, businesses dwindled away, as people migrated towards cities and towns. However, the area still has a Community Center and a very proud heritage. A store has been opened in recent years, and continues to do business.
