The Jefferson Community
Jefferson was likely named after the Nation's forefathers, as no particular record of anyone with the name of Jefferson appears in the records. Jefferson was completely dominated by Democrats. It was an area where the "Death-Bed Promisers" lived, according to Mr. Webb. Legend has it that as the old grandfather lay on his deathbed, he would gather the family in the room and say, "I want you to promise me, on my dying bed, that you will NEVER vote for a Republican!" Back when it was a separate voting district, if there were a couple of votes cast for a Republican, extraordinary measures where taken to find out who would do such a thing. Jefferson School was established at least by 1904. Also in the Jefferson community, near the Caney Fork River, was a one-teacher school named New Hope.
Caney Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church was established in 1874, and services were held there until about 1990. The building was shared with the Mount Hope The Baptist congregation for many years, and the cemetery used as a community cemetery. In recent years, the Mount Hope Church built a new brick building across the road where the old Jefferson school once stood.
Jefferson was served by the Catlen Mills post office from 1872 to 1904. John P. Tittsworth had a store in Jefferson in 1861. Meanwhile Pate's Ford Marina has been on the lake for 50 years.
